Buddy walk:

Grand Forks Mayor Mike Brown will lead the fourth annual Buddy Walk on Oct. 9 along with local representative 11-year-old Charley Baumer.

Individuals with Down syndrome, along with their families, friends and co- workers, will participate in the one-mile Buddy Walk as part of National Down Syndrome Awareness Month. Registration begins at 2 p.m. in the Grand Cities Mall, and the walk begins at 2:30 p.m. After the walk there will be live entertainment and refreshments.

Info: Call The Arc, Upper Valley, at (701) 772-6191.

Travel scams:Although many travel packages are from legitimate suppliers, a small number may be from dealers out to rip off consumers, advises AAA Travel. Scams use many techniques:

** Vacation certificates. Many packages fall short of their promises, providing poor quality lodging and limited availability.

** Free trips. Notification that you've been "selected to receive a free trip" may include hidden costs or require expensive purchases.

** Multi-day travel packages. When costs are figured separately, travelers may find their "savings" were expensive.

** High-pressure sales tactics. An overly aggressive approach requiring an on-the-spot-decision is characteristic of scam artists.

Horse photographer: Professional equine photographer Christy Doyea of Grand Forks will hold a workshop Saturday and Sunday at North Dakota State University.

It's the first of several equine educational events that the NDSU equine science program will host in coming months. All events are open to the public.

Doyea's two-day workshop will provide participants with photography fundamentals and special instruction on photographing horses. It will combine classroom instruction with field experience.

Participants must bring their own camera and film or digital memory cards. NDSU will provide one-hour photo developing Saturday night. Participants also may bring 35 mm film to practice on Doyea's camera.

A registration form is available online at www.ag.ndsu.edu/ars/equine_studies/events/EquineEdEvents.htm. Send the completed form to Bobbi Bingeman by mail at 159 Hultz Hall, NDSU, Fargo, ND 58105, by e-mail at bobbi.bingeman@ndsu.edu or by fax at (701) 231-7590, attention Bobbi. Workshop organizers are encouraging participants to register in advance.
