Buddy Walk Set for Oct. 8
By: Abe Winter WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

09/11/2005

The fourth annual Omaha Buddy Walk, which raises money while promoting awareness and understanding of people with Down syndrome, is scheduled Oct. 8 at Lake Zorinsky, 156th and F Streets.

The event is a one-mile walk. Registration starts at 7:30 a.m., followed by the walk at 9:30.

Last year's walk attracted 650 participants, who raised a total of $33,000. Entrants pay a $20 fee and also can solicit pledges to qualify for additional prizes.

"We give all that back to the community," said Mary McHale, a committee member of the Omaha Down Syndrome Parents Network.

She said the proceeds in 2004 helped stage three seminars dealing with issues concerning disabilities, provided stipends for parents to attend training sessions and provided donations to groups in the Omaha area that work with people with disabilities.

McHale said clowns, face painters, a disc jockey and other activities for children are planned at the event.
