THIS WEEKEND

Birding Festival, a weekend of educational workshops, guided hikes, exhibits and field trips. Pocono Environmental Education Center, off Route 209, Dingmans Ferry. Begins tonight and continues through Sunday afternoon. $125 includes all meals and lodging. Reservations: 828-2319 or peec.org.

Buddy Walk with the Luzerne County Down Syndrome Network with games, food and music. Kirby Park, Wilkes-Barre. Saturday with registration at 9 a.m. and walk at 10 a.m. around the one-mile track. Information: 333-5941.

Castle Point Hike, six steep miles. Meet at the Greater Scranton YMCA, 706 N. Blakely St., Dunmore. Sunday, 8 a.m. $5. 343-5144.

Sunday Morning Birding with the Greater Wyoming Valley Audubon Society. Meet in the parking lot of the former King?s Department Store at Market Street and Dawes Avenue in Kingston. Sunday at 8 a.m. Bring binoculars. 542-5948.

Smart Angler Family Fishing Clinic for families with little or no fishing experience. All fishing equipment and bait provided. Designed for ages 8 to 12. Topics include types of fish found in Pennsylvania, fish habitats, safety, equipment, outdoor manners and protection of water resources. Hawkeye Ski Trail Hike, six to seven moderate miles through the Wyoming State Forest. Bring lunch and water. Meet at Sheldon?s Diner, Route 118, Sweet Valley. Sunday at 9:45 a.m. Sponsored by the Susquehanna Trailers. 655-4979.

Greater Hazleton Area Arthritis Walk with three-mile and one-mile courses. Can Do Corporate Park, Route 309, Drums. Sunday with registration at 10 a.m. and walk at 11 a.m. 823-2888 or arthritis.org.

FUTURE

Wilderness Survival I, with survival expert Ivan Erchak. Topics include the art of gathering, navigational techniques, primitive and modern methods of survival and building a sense of confidence in the wilderness. Pocono Environmental Education Center, off Route 209, Dingmans Ferry. Sept. 30 to Oct. 2. $149 includes meals, lodging in a rustic cabin with private bath and all programs. 828-2319 or peec.org.

Bike Ride, 8.7-mile ride from the Lehigh Gorge State Park, White Haven Access to the Rockport Access. Along the way, learn about the history surrounding the Gorge and Lehigh River. Oct. 2 at 9 a.m. Registration: 403-2006.

Mount Tammany Hike, 3.5 steep miles through the Delaware Water Gap with great views from the rock outcroppings. Meet at the Greater Scranton YMCA, 706 N. Blakely St., Dunmore. Oct. 2 at 9:15 a.m. $5. 343-5144.

North Branch Triathlon, third annual event with a 4.5-mile foot race, a five-mile canoe trip and a 12-mile flat-course bike ride. Begins and ends in downtown Wyalusing.
