The Germantown Middle School Builders Club became better buddies as they built Buddy support and boosted Buddy awareness during the 2005 Buddy Walk for the National Down Syndrome Society at Memphis Botanic Garden.

Twenty of the club's members along with about 2,200 other participants enjoyed a day of picnicking, entertainment, games, and a stroll amidst near-perfect weather.

"I am pleased with the participation that we had at the Buddy Walk," said eighth-grade English teacher and club sponsor Nancy Allen.

"Because the event took place on a Sunday afternoon, I was concerned that many of our members wouldn't be able to make it. Although many of these students had other commitments, they found a way to participate."

The Buddy Walk is a one-mile walking event that celebrates the abilities and accomplishments of people with Down syndrome. Eighth- grader Cortnee Chrestman was thrilled to help buddies walk for their eighth year in the Mid-South.

"I came out to walk because it gave me a chance to help out the community and all the people who have Down syndrome," said Cortnee. "I am glad to volunteer and meet new people."

The Builders Club is an organization dedicated to promoting leadership in youths through community service. Members learn about many agencies and take part in projects such as the St. Jude Craft & Necessity Kits, Kiwanis's Priority One Book Drive, and CASA Birthday Extravaganza.

"It is important to participate in volunteer events because it is a good way to show someone that you care," said club member Callie Dugard. "When you help people, it leaves you with a good feeling."

Allen thought the event would give the middle-schoolers the opportunity to learn about Down syndrome and to "experience the positive energy and optimism that results from a number of individuals getting together for a selfless cause."

Allen is in her fifth year of sponsoring the school's Builders Club along with eighth-grade teachers Gaithor Key and Debbie Russell, as well as the Kiwanis Club of Germantown. Dedicated to community service, the Germantown Kiwanis is an organization of business professionals who believe that today's youths want to take an active role in solving problems and meeting the needs of the world around them.

"Kiwanis strives to instill in our youths a sense of giving back to the community," said past Germantown Kiwanis president Mike Agee. "One way we do that is by encouraging our Builders Club members to participate in worthy service projects like the National Down Syndrome Society's Buddy Walk."
